Random Acts of Kindness...

Last week, I presented at INANE on "Innovations in Content Delivery." During my presentation, I happened to mention a book I had recently read, The Gurnsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. In one of those fun coincidences that are a nice part of life, I received this email from INANE member Judy Lewis, who wrote, "When I got to the airport and sat down in a vacant seat at the departure lounge, there right next to me was a copy of the book [GLAPPPS] with a note from the former reader saying she had left the book so someone else could enjoy it as much as she had...and then to pass it on after I finished it! What a coincidence. I 'm enjoying it tremendously, and it's all thanks to your comments that I even picked it up!" So very cool! This was in the United Express departure lounge at O'Hare International Airport.

As much as I love my Kindle, this is one thing I can't do: leave a book behind for an unsuspecting stranger to discover and love as much as I did. Although, to be honest, I enjoyed GLAPPPS so much, I'm not sure I would leave it behind...I might want to read it again one of these days.

The lead author, Mary Ann Shaffer, had worked on this book for years, doing extensive research and making many trips to Guernsey. In December, 2007, she became unexpectedly ill. Her niece, Annie Barrows (who is an author in her own right) stepped into collaborate with her aunt and help her finish the book. Shaffer died in February 2008 and sadly, after all those years of work, never had the chance to see the book in print (the hardcover version was published in July 2008).

Why a website, blog and email list for INANE?

Our small committee has been busy with the website and email list. I have volunteered to create a blog and Facebook page, both of which now exist. I hope you take a few minutes to access these resources and see what they have to offer!

The blog is linked to Facebook and vice versa. So, if you post on the blog, it will be shared as a note on the FB page. If you post at FB, it will show up in the tracker on the side of the blog.

How are FB and the blog different from our website? In many ways:

1) They are more dynamic. Updates, info, etc. can be posted and will instantly be available to all users in real-time.

2) Anyone who is a fan of INANE on FB can post to the FB site: either short updates (on the wall) or longer notes.

3) If someone wants to be an author on the blog, just send me a message with your name and email address and I'll add you. We can have up to 100 authors on the blog.

4) Items 2 and 3 allow more INANE members to be involved in generating content and info about the group, our work as editors, etc. A website, while very, very useful, has a whole different dynamic.

How are FB and the blog different from our Yahoo email list?

1) Personally, I find the email list is good for short announcements and updates. To me, it is not the ideal medium for longer comments, issues that warrant discussion, and so on. On the blog, comments are enabled. Suppose editor X has an issue that s/he is dealing with. S/he could post a blog post about it (keeping it general, of course and not using names and so on) and then other members would be able to discuss and comment. Someone coming later to the discussion would be able to read the original post and all the comments. Personally, I find this sort of discourse is very difficult to achieve in an email mailing list.

2) Following on item 1, having a blog allows those who are interested to participate (by commenting). Those who have less interest in the topic can pass by. I think I heard some discussion at the Chicago meeting that people didn't want a lot of discussion occurring on the email list because they don't like extraneous messages cluttering up their mailbox. They wanted the default for the email list to be "reply to sender" not reply to the list. But what if someone does want to have a discussion with more than one person involved? Think blog!

In terms of thinking of these three resources:

Website: least dynamic, hardest to update; good for archiving information,
posting pictures, providing resources, etc.

Facebook/Blog: updateable in real-time; provides a forum for discussion and exchange among the members; when a topic is not of interest, a member can easily opt out.

Email list: updates in real-time; good for announcements, sharing information with the group.

I see all three as equally valuable resources, sharing different purposes and all working together to help us in our work as editors.

Please let me know if you have any questions or feel free to leave a comment here. I look forward to many interesting discussions!

Linked to our Facebook page...

This blog is linked to our Facebook page (I hope, I am testing this out), so if you are a fan on INANE on Facebook, you should automatically see posts from here on your wall.

Welcome to the Blog for INANE!

INANE - The International Academy of Nursing Editors - is moving forward with a new and expanded Internet presence. We have created a new website (www.nursingeditors-inane.org), a Facebook page, and now this blog. This will be a forum for discussion and sharing information in a dynamic and rapidly updated format.

All INANE members are welcome to blog here. If you have experience with blogging, dive right in. If you are new to it, here's your chance to experiment and learn. To become a blog author, either leave a comment here or send me a message, either through the Yahoo email list or directly to me, and I will add you to the authorized author list. All I need is your name and email address.

Please note that anyone can leave a comment. You don't need to be one of the blog authors to be a commenter.

Please add this blog to your list of blogs to follow and check in often for new information and updates. Please leave a comment if you have questions!
